SAFE USE OF PRODUCTS
WHAT IS HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE ?
Any chemical that is:
Listed in Worksafe's list of designated hazardous substances, Worksafe's exposure standards booklet, or a substance classified as hazardous using the approved classification criteria.
SAFETY RULES FOR USE OF WORKPLACE CHEMICALS
- Consider all Chemicals Hazardous.
- Read label directions and Material Safety Data Sheets prior to use.
- Never mix Chemicals together.
- Make yourself aware of colour and characteristics of the Chemical products you use.
- Replace damaged or defected labels.
- Wear personal protective equipment, safety glasses and suitable gloves when handling workplace chemicals.
WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD BE ON THE LABEL?
- Class and risk label (where applicable) , such as flammable liquid sign on Mineral Turpentine.
- Product name, chemical name if applicable.
- UN code, if it is Dangerous Goods, such as Petrol.
- Ingredients and formulation details.
- Directions for use.
- Safety Phases.
- Details of Manufacturer.
- Reference to MSDS.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS.
- Identification: Product Name
- Un Number, Hazchem code, Dangerous goods class.
- Physical Description/Properties.
- Ingredients.
- Health Hazard Information.
- Precautions for use.
- Safety Handling Precautions ( Including spillage procedure).
- Emergency contact numbers.
FIRST AID PROCEDURES.
- Eyes - Hold eyes open and flood with cool potable water for 15 minutes. It may be necessary to have a second person help with this procedure.
- Skin contact - Remove contaminated clothing and wash affected area thoroughly under cool running water. Use a safety shower if available. Do not wear the contaminated clothing again until all have been laundered – especially shoes.
- Inhalation - Remove to fresh air, if person not breathing commence basic CPR.
- Ingestion - Consult MSDS for particular chemical and follow specific First Aid directions.
- Seek Medical attention following First Aid.
SUMMARY
- Consider all chemicals potentially hazardous.
- Follow basic safety rules and First Aid procedures.
- Read labels and MSDS.
- MSDS need to be kept in the area where products are stored and used. Not to have them available at all times is an offence and may result in a penalty.
- Chemicals ideally should be delivered through automatic dispensing systems- discourage any decanting on site.
- Ensure a safe working environment for staff and consumers by complying with Hazardous Substance Reg (19960 and OH&S REG 2000.
