SAFE USE OF PRODUCTS


WHAT IS HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE ?

Any chemical that is:
Listed in Worksafe's list of designated hazardous substances, Worksafe's exposure standards booklet, or a substance classified as hazardous using the approved classification criteria.

SAFETY RULES FOR USE OF WORKPLACE CHEMICALS
  1. Consider all Chemicals Hazardous.
  2. Read label directions and Material Safety Data Sheets prior to use.
  3. Never mix Chemicals together.
  4. Make yourself aware of colour and characteristics of the Chemical products you use.
  5. Replace damaged or defected labels.
  6. Wear personal protective equipment, safety glasses and suitable gloves when handling workplace chemicals.
WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD BE ON THE LABEL?
  1. Class and risk label (where applicable) , such as flammable liquid sign on Mineral Turpentine.
  2. Product name, chemical name if applicable.
  3. UN code, if it is  Dangerous Goods, such as Petrol.
  4. Ingredients and formulation details.
  5. Directions for use.
  6. Safety Phases.
  7. Details of Manufacturer.
  8. Reference to MSDS.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS.
  1. Identification: Product Name
  2. Un Number, Hazchem code, Dangerous goods class.
  3. Physical Description/Properties.
  4. Ingredients.
  5. Health Hazard Information.
  6. Precautions for use.
  7. Safety Handling Precautions ( Including spillage procedure).
  8. Emergency contact numbers.
FIRST AID PROCEDURES.
  1. Eyes - Hold eyes open and flood with cool potable water for 15 minutes. It may be necessary to have a second person help with this procedure.
  2. Skin contact - Remove contaminated clothing and wash affected area thoroughly under cool running water. Use a safety shower if available. Do not wear the contaminated clothing again until all have been laundered – especially shoes.
  3. Inhalation - Remove to fresh air, if person not breathing commence basic CPR.
  4. Ingestion - Consult MSDS for particular chemical and follow specific First Aid directions.
  5. Seek Medical attention following First  Aid.
SUMMARY
  1. Consider all chemicals potentially hazardous.
  2. Follow basic safety rules and First Aid procedures.
  3. Read labels and MSDS.
  4. MSDS need to be kept in the area where products are stored and used. Not to have them available at all times is an offence and may result in a penalty.
  5. Chemicals ideally should be delivered through automatic dispensing systems- discourage any decanting on site.
  6. Ensure a safe working environment for staff and consumers by complying with Hazardous Substance Reg (19960 and OH&S REG 2000.
